People have the knowledge that Pearls are found only in the Sea. Earlier divers used to dive in the sea, collect thousands of Shells and after killing them they used to get a few Pearls till 1980s. But today we can culture pearls in the ponds, rivers, and cement tanks also.

Diamond, Pearl, Coral, Hessonite, Blue Sapphire, Cat’s Eye, Yellow Sapphire, Ruby, and Emerald among all the Gems, Pearl is the only one Gem which can be cultured. Today India imports crores of Pearls from China and Japan. [Report: - Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, Mumbai]. Do you think only Japan and China can culture Pearls?
No, any man in the world can culture Pearl by operating the shells. All the materials and equipments are available in India, only the knowledge- how to operate the shells is lacking.

In India all resources are available in plenty and in this Field, 30 lac people can get a new job. Along with that, India will not have to import crores of Pearls from the foreign countries. Today only China and Japan are the two countries in the world which export Pearls to rest of the countries and earn a profit of US $3 billion. India is the only country which can grow more Pearls than these two countries. In China 8 among 100 people are engaged in this Field in one or the other way. I am surprised to find that our neighboring country, Bangladesh, also got involved in Pearl Culture in 1999 and is doing quite well.

In India, the credit for culturing Pearls goes to Senior Scientist Dr. K. Jankiram, who showed a new path to the country.  The young scientist, Dr. Ajay Sonkar, has knocked the door to take India in the First place by producing world’s biggest size Pearl. Each of his Cultured Pearl counts for US $30,000 (near about 12 lac Rupees), whereas the Production cost is very less. [Ref: - 25July 2005 Nav Bharat Times, pg – 1].

Pearl Culture is a very easy and simple work, where, with little efforts, one can get good profits. Shells are found in plenty in almost all the villages. We can operate the shells with the help of surgical equipments and insert the Nucleus (which is of different shapes and sizes) for the Pearl production. Later the Shells are kept in the nylon nets and hanged in the pond or the cement tank or whatever the source. They are given food viz Cow dung and Algae, according to the size of the pond or river. After a few months, the Nucleus in the shell is covered with the Pearl Sac from which the Pearl takes birth, which shines and has the brightness of the moon. Because of its smooth shine, it is liked by all and it also suits all.
